In the cup

Turmeric, in detail.

What it tastes like

Warm and earthy with cardamom running through it, and the golden colour that gives the drink its name everywhere outside India. Aromatic and gently spiced; the turmeric is present without being medicinal.

Where it earns its place

Wellness-leaning cafés, yoga studios, hotel wellness floors, and late-evening service where a caffeine-free hot drink is wanted. Haldi doodh at home, a golden latte on a menu — the same drink, and it is worth writing both names on the board.

What to add

Hot milk, stirred well; turmeric settles faster than the others. A crack of black pepper is traditional if the kitchen wants to be authentic about it.

Milk, not water

Everything else in this range dissolves in water. These do not — the declared ratio is about 14 g into 100 ml of hot milk, and milk is doing structural work here rather than just softening the drink. It carries the fat-soluble aromatics that make almond, pistachio and cardamom smell like themselves, and it gives the cup the body the whole category depends on. Made with water these taste thin and slightly chalky, which is the single most common way a good pack gets written off. The practical consequence for a counter is that this line needs a milk supply and a way to heat it, which the instant teas and coffees do not; it also means the drink can be made with whatever milk the customer wants, because the mix is not carrying its own.
