How to make an iced matcha latte, without the whisk

An iced matcha latte is green tea powder, milk and ice: simple on paper, but at a busy counter plain matcha clumps, settles and tastes different with every barista. This guide covers what matcha is, why cafes use a matcha premix, the method step by step, and the flavoured matcha drinks the same base makes.

The short answer

Dissolve 15–30 g of matcha premix in 100 ml of warm milk, stir until smooth, and pour over 5–10 ice cubes. That is the method printed for our Classic Matcha 3-in-1. Because the premix already holds the matcha, creaminess and sweetness, there is no whisking, no lumps and no guessing the sugar.

What matcha is

Matcha is green tea ground into a fine powder. Because you drink the whole leaf rather than an infusion, it tastes stronger and greener than brewed green tea, with a gentle bitterness and a natural creaminess that suits milk. That is why the iced matcha latte has become a fixture of cafe menus.

Why cafes use a matcha premix

  • No clumping. Plain matcha needs sifting and whisking to avoid lumps; a premix dissolves with a stir.
  • Same taste every cup. The matcha, milk component and sugar are already balanced, so the drink does not change with the barista.
  • Faster service. One measure, one stir, poured over ice.

The method, step by step

  1. Dissolve 15–30 g of premix in 100 ml of warm milk. Stir until there are no lumps.
  2. Pour over 5–10 ice cubes.
  3. Add a topping if you like: 30–40 g of tapioca pearls, popping boba or nata de coco.
  4. Finish with 20 g of whipped cream if you want a dessert-style cup.

Dissolving the powder in warm milk first and adding ice afterwards keeps the drink smooth and stops it tasting thin as the ice melts. To cook pearls, see how to cook tapioca pearls.
